Head Coach Rodney Lossow

Became South’s Head Football Coach in February 2017….. Served as an assistant coach with South High since the Fall of 2014….. was Head Football Coach at Roosevelt High School for 18 years…..Also has been Head Softball Coach, Head Gymnastics Coach, Head Girls Soccer Coach and Head Badminton Coach in Minneapolis throughout his 25 years working in the District…..Taught Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education for 25 years in the Minneapolis Public Schools. He currently teaches Adapted Physical Education at South High School and Roosevelt High School.

Coach Lossow is a South Graduate…..Attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison on a Football Scholarship…..Enjoyed a five-year Professional Football Career playing for the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Calgary Stampeders (CFL) and the Orlando Thunder (WLAF).

Coach Lossow has been married since 1995 to Janine and has three sons…..He considers it a great honor to lead the South Football Program. Go Tigers!

Assistant Coach Ernest Sutton

First season as an Assistant Head Coach at South. Will serve as Offensive Coordinator…..Coached at the University of Northwestern St. Paul, focusing on linebacker corps…..Coach two-time all-conference, COSIDA Academic All-American linebacker Ben Greener…..In 2016, helped coach UNW to its first NCAA DIII playoff berth….. Before UNW, was on staff at Greenville College in Illinois from 2008-10, where he worked with the running backs and kick returners with the team winning the UMAC South title with a 7-3 record…..Under his tutelage, Anthony Ambers was named the UMAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2009; amassing just over 1,500 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. Ambers 157 yards rushing per game was second in the Nation in all of DIII…..He is also the Head Track coach at Edison High School where his girl’s teams have won three of the last four State Class A titles.

Assistant Coach Terrence Roberts

First season as an Assistant Football Coach at South High School in February of 2017......Graduated from Washburn High School in the early 90’s…..Was an outstanding football and track student athlete…..Earned his Associate of Arts degree from North Dakota State College of Science on a football scholarship…..While in college, he played in and won the 1994 RC Cola Bowl…..Transferred to Grambling State University, a Historical Black University in NE Louisiana…..Played football for the Hall of Fame Coach Eddie Robinson , who won the most games of any coach in NCAA Division 1 History…..Graduated from Grambling State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.

Since the Fall of 2009, he has served as the Dean of Students at South…..He is the proud father of one son and resides in South Minneapolis. 

Assistant Coach Cedric McKinley

 First year as an Assistant Varsity/JV Football Coach, working with the lineman on both sides of the ball…..will be calling the defense for the JV…..coached at Roosevelt High School in the past…..Played High School Football in Demopolis, Alabama. Attended the University of Minnesota on a Football Scholarship…..Played a couple of seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings.

He joined the staff of South High School in the Fall of 2016.  

Assistant Coach Ernest Tucker

 First year as an assistant coach at South…..From Cleveland Ohio, graduated in 2006…..Attended Vermillion Community College and started for two years at running back…..Won National Junior College Championship first year…..Graduated with degree in Elementary Education and Communication from the University of Minnesota-Morris…..Two year letter winner…..Coached three seasons at Roseville Area High School

Assistant Coach Brian Avre Sr.

First Year as an assistant coach at South…..Has coached Youth Football for eight years…..He started coaching in Minneapolis to give back to the community and because he loves the game…..He is very excited to help coach the young men at South and work with many of the same young men he coached in the youth leagues.

Assistant Coach Paul Nettles

First Year as an assistant coach at South…..Had the opportunity to play college Football but I chose to play college basketball…..Coached basketball for five years…..Lived in South Minneapolis the majority of my life…..South High Alumni…..Love people and is very excited to be a part of the South High School Football program…..Looks forward to helping our student/athletes develop on and off the field and serve his community…..Major in Communications in college…..25 years old.   

Assistant Coach Jeff Buszta

First season as an assistant coach for South Football whose responsibility is the administrative end of the sport…..Began coaching in 1980 at what is now St. John Paul II K-8 school, coaching baseball and basketball…..Assistant Coach for Girl’s Basketball and Softball at North for two seasons and baseball for eight seasons…..Served at North Athletic Director for eight years…..currently volunteers as the Minneapolis District Athletic Historian.

Lived his entire life in the Minneapolis area….. Born and raised in Northeast Minneapolis…..attended high school at Grace in Fridley (now Totino Grace)…..graduated with B.S. and M.A.T. degrees from University of Wisconsin-River Falls…..Earned Educational Specialist degree from University of St. Thomas.

Began teaching career as a substitute teacher. Worked one year at Edison and Northeast each…..Taught 26 years at North, with the second year splitting time between North and Franklin…..Currently in his third year at South.
